Steam Machine vs Gaming Handheld: Is a $1,050 Steam Machine Worth It?

Short answer: the Steam Machine is Valve’s living-room gaming PC, and it launched at $1,050 for the 512GB model. That’s a lot more than many people expected, and Valve blamed rising RAM and storage costs. Whether it’s worth it depends on where you want to play. I haven’t tested the Steam Machine, so this compares what Valve has published with my experience on a Windows handheld, the ROG Xbox Ally X.

Steam Machine price and release

According to Road to VR, pre-orders opened June 22, 2026 and it shipped from June 29. Pricing:

  • 512GB: $1,050 ($1,130 with a Steam Controller)
  • 2TB: $1,350 ($1,430 with a Steam Controller)

Valve used randomized reservations to limit resellers, and said “the overall effect is that our original goal for the price of Steam Machine is no longer viable” because of component costs. You can read more about why in my post on the RAM shortage and rising tech prices.

Steam Machine vs a gaming handheld

A Steam Machine is a box for your TV. A handheld like the ROG Xbox Ally X goes anywhere. Here’s how I’d think about the choice:

  • Play at the TV only? A Steam Machine makes sense, since it’s built for the living room.
  • Play in bed, on the couch, while traveling? A handheld wins. On the Ally X I enjoyed story games like Spider-Man 2 and Black Myth: Wukong anywhere in the house.
  • Library: a Windows handheld plays Steam, Epic and Battle.net games, plus emulators.

I covered how the Ally X performs in my ROG Xbox Ally X review, and you can watch it here:

What about the Steam Frame?

Valve hasn’t announced a Steam Frame release date or price as of the Road to VR report. Its author expects a similar pattern of a high price and a short gap between pre-order and release, since it faces the same component costs. That’s speculation, so treat it as such.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the Steam Machine?

$1,050 for 512GB and $1,350 for 2TB, or $1,130 and $1,430 with a Steam Controller.

Why is the Steam Machine so expensive?

Valve says rising component costs, especially RAM and storage, made its original price goal unworkable.

Is a gaming handheld better than a Steam Machine?

If you want to play away from the TV, yes. If you only play on a TV, a Steam Machine is built for that. I’d choose based on where you actually play.

Final thoughts

At $1,050, the Steam Machine needs to fit how you play. Would you buy one, or choose a handheld? Tell me in the YouTube comments, and subscribe for more gaming hardware coverage.
